The process includes five main steps: ingestion (taking in food), digestion (breaking down food), absorption (nutrients entering the blood), assimilation (using nutrients), and egestion (removal of waste). Different animals have different ways of taking and digesting food, like humans, cows (ruminants), and even tiny organisms like amoeba.
